5.0 out of 5 stars An essential read for the SME owner, 16 Apr 2009
Review taken from April / May edition of First Voice of Business, the magazine of the FSB.

When harnessed properly, marketing is one of the most powerful and effective tools that a small business has at its disposal. If you want to grow and succeed in challenging times, then you simply cannot afford to overlook the vital role that marketing plays in the long-term survival and eventual success of your business.
That's why this book should be required reading for anyone looking to grow their business. It ranks alongside Michael Gerber's E-Myth as essential guidance to all SMEs.
What makes this book stand out is not the fact that it is choc-full of useful tips for building sales, but the way the messages are easy to read, a style which can be readily applied to businesses to get significant, long-term results without having a degree or in-house marketeer.
The premise of the book is all about combining time and energy with some marketing know-how and a splash of creativity so that the results go up but the marketing spend comes down.
It is well-structured and can be read from start to finish, but is also an excellent reference book: for example, if you are planning an exhibition, then you go straight to that chapter.
All the key directives are backed by understandable case studies which show how they can be swiftly applied in the real world.
This is not a book for students of marketing or academics. Its narrative is not a character-led storybook, rather it is a genuine attempt at creating a 'how-to-market-my-business' manual for those that do not have time for the theory, but just need to get on with things.
Dee's clear and concisely written book should empower small business owners to grow their business as long as they follow the simple instructions outlined here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant marketing toolkit.    14 May 2009
By
Julie Budge - Kids Love Earth

As a small independent retailer I looked for a book that read easily,
dip-inable and full of practical ideas. This book  is not only a great find, great inspiration but a brilliant marketing toolkit. No technical terms that stop you reading more but just  a totally absorbing read. The way  it is divided makes it extra special as it is written at a perfect pace and having been on a workshop led by Dee, it is like you having her by your side whenever you need to think about marketing. It is packed with good ideas, makes you think and best of all , it gets you motivated to do something.
Finally, it works, I have recently secured a regular column with my local paper something previously I attempted but to no avail, the techniques taught by the book gave me confidence to pursue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.  2 Mar 2009

By
Keith Pordum - Chairman, CADIA
               Managing Director, Bon Appetit

As a grey haired entrepreneur I have studied many marketing books over the years, but this is the first marketing manual that I have come across that combines

1.      a clear focus on helping small businesses, with
2.      a genuinely valuable toolkit of inexpensive and easily applied marketing ideas.

A key to success in business is getting the basics right. It is about being effective and efficient; that is doing the right things and doing them right. This book not only provides you with the basics but gives you many great ideas on how to apply them. It is a recommended read for both new and established business owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book really delivers.  25 Feb 2009

By
Sarah Riley - Utility Warehouse Discount Club

The title says it all – this book really delivers! Its message is clear and it does exactly what it says in the title. The style is direct and incredibly accessible. Whether you want a book to dip into to pick up instant tips or a book to read cover to cover then this is it! The detailed contents pages are very informative and easy to navigate around to enable the reader to find exactly what they are looking for. Most importantly it explodes two myths. Firstly it shows that you do not need a massive budget to market your business effectively and secondly that successful marketing is not an elusive and mysterious art form. Quite the opposite, the down to earth practical advice that Dee gives is a fantastic dose of common sense that really works! For any small business owner it is essential reading either to confirm or consolidate the marketing strategies you currently employ       ( for example networking ) or indeed to venture into new areas of marketing (for example e-marketing) hitherto unexplored. Read this and you’ll be sure of profitable results!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fab read,  2 Feb 2009
By  Debbie - Wishfish.org.uk

This easy-to-read, pick-up/put-down, dynamite book is a real must for anyone who is running their own company. As a sole-trader, with  a limited budget for marketing & PR, this book has it all - its as if I have  Dee Blick as a permanent member of my team!! How fab is that!
This book allows you to dip in to the areas you require information on.  And, having read it from cover to cover, highlighted the bits for  me and earmarked certain chapters I now have a very clear, simple but  effective plan for my marketing strategy for the next 12 months, broken down  into manageable 3 month chunks as suggested.
The marketing/PR arena has always been a little daunting for me as a new business owner but now I have the confidence to write a press-release, cold-call with ease and produce a newsletter that will captivate my readers!
I couldn't have asked for anything more to get my marketing strategy moving in the right direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable and packed full of great ideas, 1 Jan 2009

I have spent a lot of money on books that were either too complicated or too simple and gave me no ideas, this book was different as it was pitched at an understandable jargon free practical level.

The style, structure and plain common sense packed into this paperback has given me so many ideas and determination to make my business much more successful. I cannot afford a big spend on marketing but with the ideas i now have and my own determination to put them into practise i am sure 2009 will be a good year despite the economy.

Could not have come at a better time, buy, borrow or steal if you have a small business that needs ideas and guidance now.
